TRAVELOGUE UGANDA: Jelena Unger

Jelena Unger, originally from Koprivnica, has spent her entire life traveling the world in an adventurous spirit. She has visited all continents except Antarctica, organizing every trip either by herself or with her husband.

She has been volunteering since 2020, when she began living independently, finding opportunities through the “Helpstay” platform. Thanks to her positive attitude and openness toward people, all of her travels have been filled with beautiful experiences.

She had dreamed of volunteering in Africa since childhood, but she knew it was an experience that would change her forever, so she kept postponing it. When she finally decided to take that step, she chose an orphanage in Uganda, as it is one of the poorest countries in the world today.

After returning from Uganda, she said:

“I always try to learn and stay open to all people, but what I experienced there was something completely new—something not everyone could go through. Maybe I also pushed my own limits, especially since I knew in advance that I wouldn’t come back the same. Many things that once seemed important in my life, I crossed out after returning from Africa and completely rearranged my priorities.”

There are so many people in the world who need help, yet too many turn a blind eye. Even though thousands of kilometers separate us from Africa, we must not ignore the voices of children who dream of things we often take for granted sometimes even just a meal.

Many children in Uganda eat only one meal a day, yet they are far more active than our children. Besides attending school, they also perform daily, often very physically demanding work. There are two million orphans living in Uganda.

One of the organizations caring for them is Child’s Life Foundation Uganda from the city of Mbale.

In cooperation with this organization, the Rima Choir will hold a charity concert at Domoljub Hall in Koprivnica on April 29, 2026, starting at 7:00 PM, to raise funds for the organization’s work.

The concert announcement took place on March 12, 2026, at 7:00 PM at Pixel, where Jelena Unger will share her volunteer experience at the orphanage run by Child’s Life Foundation. She volunteered there at the end of 2024 and continues to support the children organizing presentations in schools and kindergartens to collect donations of school supplies, sponsoring a girl’s education, and now preparing for this charity concert together with her choir friends.

The members of Rima Choir have been involved in many humanitarian events over the years. They also participated in collecting donations that Jelena delivered to the orphanage in Uganda. Aware of how urgently these children need help, it didn’t take long after Jelena’s return for them to begin planning this fundraising initiative.

Led by Romana Pavliša, the Rima Choir, together with many outstanding guest musicians, will generously offer their talent and time, once again showing their big hearts.

Let Domoljub Hall on April 29, 2026, become a place of love and kindness. Let us show that we have not grown indifferent to the suffering of others because compassion is the strength that changes the world.

“Please be part of this mission—together, we can bring hope, change lives, and create a brighter future for every child.”
